UofM Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Exhibit

  • <p>Thirty Peace Corps volunteers from five decades were featured on the quilt wall. Al the stories and images had been solicited from the UM Peace Corps 50th Anniversary website.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>In the exhibit we created a timeline that followed the establishment of the Peace Corps from the speech to the signing of the bill that officially established it.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>Students responded to Kennedy with great enthusiasm, carrying posters and some even wearing Kennedy hats.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>Much of the student activism was done in the Guskins` apartment. Letters to the editor were written, meetings were organized and held and pressure was kept up on the powers that be.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>Senator and presidential candidate John F. Kennedy addressed the waiting students—most too young to vote—when he finally arrived at the Student Union around 2:00 am. Deviating from his standard campaign speech, he suggested to the students an institution that would later become the Peace Corps.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>Images played a large role in the exhibit and the library was lucky enough to have access to a large treasure trove from the night of Kennedy`s speech and beyond.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>The Michigan Daily, the University of Michigan`s student newspaper, extensively covered the campaign by UM students to make sure the Peace Corps came about. <br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>
  • <p>The 50th Anniversary starts here! A full year of celebration started appropriately at the spot where it all began in 1960.<br /> <br /> We didn`t make the 2:00 am presentation, this is from 11:00.</p>
  • <p>The ramp up into the library was flanked on both sides by images of the many people who came out to listen to Sen. Kennedy on the cold rainy night of October 13th, stretching into the 14th.<br /> <br /> Graphic production by Paragon / Installation by UofM</p>

Ask What You Can Do for Your Exhibit

After Jen’s successful design for the Ghost Army Exhibit at the Hatcher Graduate Library on the campus of the University of Michigan, Good Design Group was invited to design the temporary exhibit celebrating the 50th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s speech inspiring the creation of the Peace Corps. We were lucky enough to have a wealth of material to work with and the excellent research abilities of Peace Corps Volunteer Kay Clifford.

Recognizing the speech kicks off a full year of celebrations around the country. Unfortunately the exhibit was only up for two months, but you can find most of the information online.
