Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear

  • <p>The kitchen—the lifeblood of any house—is where visitors learn about foodways and how seasons affected life for the Olsen family.</p>
  • <p>Enlightening visitors as to what Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear does is a challenge. A number of exhibit elements help do that by showing work that has been completed and work yet to be done.</p>
  • <p>A well stocked pantry is a lovely sight to behold, especially in the age before grocery stores and gas stations that sell canned goods. The Olsens were fairly self-sufficient using the vegetables they grew and the animals they raised as their main food source.</p>
  • <p>The primary goal of Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear is to educate visitors about the Cultural Landscape that surrounds them in the National Lakeshore. Traditional landscape elements are being lost every day.<br /> <br /> Here, visitors learn about the Cultural Landscape by finding those elements on a illustration created especially for the purpose.</p>
  • <p>The Museum Store is small, but crucial to helping PHSB accomplish its mission.</p>
  • <p>The dining room is also the introductory space of the Olsen house. Here visitors hear the voices of the house`s previous inhabitants.</p>

Keeping Cultural Landscapes Alive

Good Design Group was invited to work with the Peavey Group and Red Road Media on the interpretive exhibits at the Olsen House within the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore at Port Oneida.

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear is a "friend of the park" organization working hard to save the Cultural Landscape of the National Lakeshore. The Olsen House is their HQ and interpretive center. Good Design Group has been asked to help tell the story of the Olsen family, the Olsen house, cultural landscapes and Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear.
